Say YES to Mathematics
As a Maths-Active School, St Patrick's College Townsville is committed to effective learning and teaching practices in mathematics. To be recognised as a Gold Level Maths-Active School, St Patrick's College Townsville has on staff at least one teacher who has presented at a QAMT event, written an article for a QAMT/AAMT journal, or worked with a group of teachers across schools to improved mathematics education.
The “Say YES to Mathematics” program was launched in 2019 as an initiative designed to empower young women in the learning of Mathematics.
Offered to Year 7, 8 and 9 students, the "Say YES to Mathematics" program features three tailor-made classroom environments known as Young Scholars.
The Young Scholars classes are designed to be a positive learning environment where students transform their independence and self-motivation into confidence and power, becoming effective problem solvers of Mathematics. Students will also develop important leadership skills as they communicate, collaborate and contribute to the Mathematics learning community of not only their individual classes but the whole of St Patrick’s College, Townsville.
Every student has the opportunity to experience the unique learning environment of the Young Scholars classes, through introductory learning activities that are specifically designed to demonstrate how Young Scholars are expected to take initiatives to solve problems using Mathematics.
Student participation in the Young Scholars classes involves parental and student consultation and invitation. It is a voluntary program that is designed to help students reach their potential in mathematical studies.
