Alliance joins global pledge to support girls’ education

On Wednesday, 11 October 2017, in celebration of International Day of the Girl, the Alliance of Girls’ Schools Australasia will launch, in collaboration with 15 international organisations, a pledge in support of girls’ education around the world.

This signals the start of a movement—a call to action to awaken the world to the importance of empowering girls through a single, inalienable right: access to a quality education.

Executive Officer of the Alliance, Loren Bridge said “too often and in too many places girls and women are still unable to fulfil their potential.

“While the majority of girls have access to quality education in countries like Australia and New Zealand we still see plenty of examples of gender inequality — only 16% of university and VET STEM graduates in Australia are female, women are sorely under represented in senior leadership roles, and they earn on average 19 per cent less than their male counterparts.

“As educators we’re keen to make our voices heard and lead this conversation towards making real change.”

The pledge conveys the unified strength within the girls’ school community and is an opportunity to stand up—and speak up—for girls’ education around the world. The concepts conveyed in the pledge—inspiration, confidence, collaboration, empowerment—reflect the common goals of the organisations involved.
