An Education Designed for Girls

College Master Plan - East Precinct Development Commences

History is in the making at St Patrick’s College, as strong enrolment growth drives the construction of a contemporary performing arts, library and learning precinct.

Ms Paulina Skerman, Principal of St Patrick’s College Townsville, said there is tremendous excitement surrounding this significant building project.  “After what has been an extensive planning, consultation and design process, we are thrilled to see the commencement of building works on-site.”

In February 2018, the Sisters of Mercy officially transferred their Strand site to the College, with full approval for the redevelopment of the land to cater for the growth of the school.  “We were honoured to have been given custodianship of this site and we are indebted to the Sisters for their vision and commitment to ensuring the school can continue to deliver a futures-focused education for the young women of the North.”

The new building will house an 800 seat performing arts auditorium, a state-of-the art library and nine classrooms to cater for dance, drama, music and hospitality.  “The unique design of this structure pays tribute to previous buildings that inhabited the site by reflecting their roof lines in a modern design. The building will be shrouded in a filigree veil resembling Irish lace, and embossed with three symbols – the shamrock, the Mercy rose and the Mercy cross - paying homage to the Irish Sisters of Mercy who established the College.  “This new space will be an important place for gathering and for learning and one that will serve as a testimony to the history and heritage of the Mercy story.”

With initial works underway, the College is hopeful of a 2020 delivery. “We have installed a time-lapse camera so that we can capture every stage of this historic project. The Sisters of Mercy have had a presence on this site since 1871, so this build will be another part of their significant story in North Queensland.

“We look forward to the continuing support of our local community as we embark on this exciting project, one that will not only enhance St Patrick’s College, but will also provide a beautiful addition to the Strand precinct.”  Information on the project is available on the College website
