Study Programs & Tutoring
Academic success is a key focus of boarding life at St Patrick's College Townsville. Our structured study program provides students with dedicated time, guidance and encouragement to develop strong learning habits and achieve their personal best.
Supervised study sessions are compulsory from 3.30pm to 5.00pm, Monday to Wednesday, with support provided by our expert teaching staff and teacher aides who know our students well. Study is organised by year level and takes place in classrooms, with flexibility to accommodate extracurricular commitments.
Students in Years 7 and 8 also participate in targeted literacy and numeracy activities designed to strengthen their reading, writing and mathematical skills.
To further support academic growth, James Cook University students deliver small-group Mathematics and Science tutoring each Monday during Weeks 3 - 9 of each term. These multi-age sessions are available to students who choose to participate.
On Thursdays, optional supervised study is available and overseen by the Assistant Dean - Academic, providing additional support for students who wish to extend their learning.
Beyond traditional study support, our Tutoring and Study Support Program offers a range of enrichment opportunities delivered in partnership with local educators and industry professionals. Recent programs have included Digital Storytelling, Shields of Her, Young Leaders, and the Pathway to Success Barista Program. These experiences reflect our belief that success looks different for every student and that learning extends beyond the classroom.
Each boarder's academic progress is closely monitored by the Assistant Dean of Boarding - Academic, who works alongside the College's Teaching and Learning Leadership Team to support pathways including QCE, ATAR and VET, as well as individual learning needs. Academic conversations are an integral part of life in the boarding community, ensuring every student is supported to grow in confidence, capability and achievement.

Acknowledgement of Country: We give thanks and respectfully acknowledge the Wulgurukaba people, the Traditional Custodians of this beautiful country whose land our College shares. We recognise their ongoing deep spiritual connection to this Country, and the care they gave for thousands of years. We also acknowledge the Bindal people as the neighbouring Custodians of their Country. We pay our respects to the Elders, past and present, and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.
