Stage 3: The Heritage Convent Restoration
With the enrolment growth and need for additional learning spaces, the College has had to place its immediate focus on building projects that provide additional learning spaces. This has meant that the complete restoration and refurbishment of the St Patrick’s Convent will be undertaken after Stage 2 is completed.
In 2020, the College commissioned Architect, Ivan McDonald to prepare a details Conservation Management Plan to ensure we were able to care for this very special building as we await the opportunity to invest in restoring it to its former beauty. The significance of this building is outlined in the following extract from the 2020 Conservation Management Plan:
“St Patrick’s Convent is the oldest known surviving purpose built convent in Queensland. The convent, home to Townsville Sisters of Mercy from 1883 to 2011, is important in demonstrating the way of life of a religious order that has made a significant contribution to the development of Queensland, particularly in relation to the provision of education and health care.”

Acknowledgement of Country: We give thanks and respectfully acknowledge the Wulgurukaba people, the Traditional Custodians of this beautiful country whose land our College shares. We recognise their ongoing deep spiritual connection to this Country, and the care they gave for thousands of years. We also acknowledge the Bindal people as the neighbouring Custodians of their Country. We pay our respects to the Elders, past, present and emerging and extend that respect to other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples here today.
